    TotalProtect Home Warranty Summary

Its limited exclusions, generous coverage caps, and quick turnaround on claims have made TotalProtect Home Warranty an industry leader for 37 years. We compiled TotalProtect Home Warranty reviews to create a comprehensive guide that helps homeowners decide whether TotalProtect is one of the best home warranties.

    • Quick turnaround on claims
    • 180-day workmanship guarantee
    • Available in 49 states

    Cost

The quotes that House Method received from TotalProtect Home Warranty ranged from $30 to $54 per month. Home warranty costs are location-based and dependent on what level of coverage. Submit your zip code and email address on their website receive a free quote. The best part is that your phone number isn’t required, so you won’t be bombarded by calls from sales agents.

    Service fee

TotalProtect Home Warranty customers will pay a service fee of $125. This is high compared to the industry average of $75 per claim. However, you could argue that a higher service fee is balanced by a lower premium.

TotalProtect offers three home warranty plans. You can choose the best home warranty plan for you by reflecting on what appliances and/or systems you’d like to protect.

If you have brand new appliances that are already covered by a manufacturer’s warranty, TotalProtect’s Systems Plan would be the best plan for you.

If you bought a newly built home but brought your old appliances, TotalProtect’s Appliances Plan might be a better option for your situation.

If all of your appliances and systems are around the same age and not covered by a builder’s or manufacturer’s warranty, TotalProtect’s Combo Plan is the best plan for the best value.

One thing to note about TotalProtect Home Warranty’s coverage is that it doesn’t offer many optional add-ons, like most home warranty companies. Customers can add coverage for their pool and/or spa but that’s it. Other home warranty companies offer optional coverage for items like a second refrigerator or a water softener.

    Coverage length

Home warranty coverage begins on the effective date noted in your TotalProtect Home Warranty service agreement. Coverage is effective for one full year. Upon expiration, TotalProtect customers are eligible to renew their home warranty coverage.

    Coverage exclusions

The majority of home warranty companies will only service covered items that fail due to normal wear and tear. However, TotalProtect Home Warranty repairs covered items that fail due to rust and corrosion too. It does not cover items that have been incorrectly installed or modified though, which is normal.

TotalProtect Home Warranty also has generous coverage caps on each item it covers. Pay-out limits range between $1,000 and $3,000.

For example, TotalProtect will cover the repair or replacement costs of your dishwasher up to $3,000. The average cost to replace a dishwasher is $1,500, so all you’ll pay is a service fee of $125.

On the other hand, TotalProtect will only cover the repair or replacement costs of your heating system up to $1,500 whereas the average cost to replace a furnace is $4,249. This means you’ll save $1,500, but you’ll still have to foot the remainder of the bill.

TotalProtect does not have an annual coverage cap either.

You can learn more about what’s covered and what isn’t by reading TotalProtect’s sample contract.

    TotalProtect Home Warranty claims

TotalProtect Home Warranty customers can file a claim by calling customer service at 800-474-4047 or by requesting service online. Having your contract or warranty number handy will streamline the process.

If you’ve filed a claim during normal business hours, TotalProtect aims to handle claims and schedule service within two hours of receiving the claim. TotalProtect Home Warranty has the fastest turnaround time we’ve come across so far.

If you submit a service request on the weekend or a holiday, TotalProtect will try to schedule an appointment with one of its pre-screened service contractors within 24 hours of receiving your claim. This is still quick compared to the industry standard four-day turnaround time.

TotalProtect has a network of 40,000 licensed professionals, so homeowners don’t have to worry about finding a quality contractor on their own.

It’s important that you let TotalProtect assign a technician rather than hiring someone on your own. You will not be reimbursed for repair or replacement costs completed by a professional outside of the home warranty company’s network.

Additionally, TotalProtect has a 180-day workmanship guarantee. This means that you won’t be charged another service fee if the same item breaks within six months of being repaired by TotalProtect. This is a great guarantee. Most home warranty companies only guarantee labor for 30 days and parts for 90 days.

    More about TotalProtect Home Warranty

    Years in business

TotalProtect has been in business for 37 years. The company is a veteran in the 47-year-old industry.

    TotalProtect Home Warranty ratings

Although a well-established company, TotalProtect does not have a rating on the Better Business Bureau’s website, which we find rather odd. It’s one of the only home warranty companies that we’ve reviewed that does not have a BBB rating.

Consumers Advocate gives TotalProtect 8.6 out of 10. It attributes this excellent score to TotalProtect’s industry-leading policies and long-term service recalls. It does call out the company’s high service fees as a reason why TotalProtect didn’t receive a perfect score.

Meanwhile, customers give the company 3.5 out of 5 stars on ConsumerAffairs.

    Our conclusion

House Method gives TotalProtect Home Warranty 3.25 out of 5 stars. We love that even though it’s an “old school” home warranty company—meaning it has 37 years of experience—it’s evolved with customers needs. TotalProtect checks off most of the boxes including the following:

    • 24/7 customer service
    • Unparalleled turnaround times on claims
    • Coverage of items that break from rust and corrosion
    • Generous coverage caps up to $3,000
    • 180-day workmanship guarantee

The two dings to TotalProtect’s rating was from not having a BBB rating, which we found rather odd for such an established company, and from limited optional coverage for “specialty” items that have become commonplace in many American households today.

    TotalProtect Home Warranty reviews

Here are some TotalProtect Home Warranty reviews from ConsumerAffairs:

Travas of Augusta, Georgia on February 4, 2019

It’s pretty expensive when stuff breaks, so I’d rather get a warranty and pay $125 than $4,000. And TotalProtect seemed to cover more stuff compared to other places.

I usually go online to submit a claim with them and their website is pretty simple to navigate.

Then, the contractor called me that afternoon and he came the enxt day. It was great dealing with him.

Having this warranty is very valuable for me and I’ll tell my friends to check TotalProtect out.

Lyndon of Greensboro, North Carolina on March 20, 2019

We first heard about TotalProtect Home Warranty through a friend and we’ve been with the company for over 10 years now.

Most recently, our water heater ruptured and needed it replaced. My wife took care of that claim and it went very smoothly for her. We got emails keeping us updated and the two technicians that installed the new heater were very nice.

I would recommend TotalProtect, no question.
